Overview
After designing and enabling a workflow, you may find that you cannot add new nodes or modify the workflow structure.
Cause
After a workflow is enabled, submitted records may already be running in this workflow. If the workflow design is changed directly, the running workflows may no longer match the updated design, which can cause workflow execution issues.
Solution
To modify the workflow structure, create a new workflow version. You can make structural changes, such as adding or deleting nodes and connection lines, in the new version. After completing the changes, publish the new version as the enabled workflow.
Workflow Versions
Workflow Version Statuses
A workflow version can be in one of three statuses:
In Design: The version is being edited and has never been enabled.
Active: The version is currently in use. New workflow records will run through this version.
History: The version was enabled previously. Existing records may have run or may still be running through this version.
Modifying a Workflow
Only versions in Design status can be fully edited, including adding or deleting nodes and connection lines, modifying routing conditions, and configuring node and workflow settings. For Active and History versions, only node and workflow settings can be modified.
To change the structure of an enabled workflow, create a new workflow version. The new version automatically copies the previous configuration. Edit it as needed, then publish it as the enabled version.
