Adjusting MAPX COUNT Formulas After the Empty-Value Change

This article applies to formulas that use ISEMPTY to check the result of the MAPX function with the COUNT operation.

Overview

The COUNT operation in the MAPX function returns the number of matching values.

Following the data engine update on May 29, 2026, the return value of MAPX("COUNT",...) when no matching values are found changed from empty to 0.

As a result, formulas that use ISEMPTY to check the MAPX("COUNT",...) result may no longer work as expected.

To maintain the original calculation logic, update the affected formulas as described below.

How to Update the Formulas?

Replacement Rules

Suppose Field A uses the following formula to count matching records:

MAPX("COUNT",map_value,map_field,result_field)

If Field B uses ISEMPTY to check the value of Field A, update Field B's formula according to its field type.

Original Formula

If Field A Is a Number Field

If Field A Is a Text Field

ISEMPTY(A)

A==0

A=="0"

IF(ISEMPTY(A),x,y)

IF(A==0,x,y)

IF(A=="0",x,y)

IF(ISEMPTY(A)==1,x,y)

IF(A==0,x,y)

IF(A=="0",x,y)

IF(ISEMPTY(A)==0,x,y)

IF(A!=0,x,y)

IF(A!="0",x,y)

Example: Preventing Duplicate Course Enrollment

For example, use MAPX to count how many times a student has enrolled in the same course. If the enrollment count is 0, the student can submit the form.

Original Formulas

A. Enrollment Count

MAPX("COUNT",Student-Course Combination,Student-Course Combination,Student Name)

B. Form Submission Validation

ISEMPTY(Enrollment Count)

Now change the formula in Form Submission Validation to:

Enrollment Count==0

The MAPX formula in Field A remains unchanged.
